ThereΚΌs nothing as inspiring as a massive kick of motivation. Your entire focus is on one goal. You feel invincible. You KNOW youΚΌre going to accomplish it this time.
But then, inevitably, the motivation fades. And youΚΌre back to square one. Dragging yourself out of bed. Trying to find a reason to push through. Not sure if this goal was the right one for you after all. Eventually, you give up, find a new goal, and the cycle starts again.
So what is it about those moments of intense motivation that seems so impossible to hold on to?
Is it the result of inspirational podcasts, giant conferences, encouragement or specific feedback from our bosses or friends? Or is it something more organic, stimulated in our brains through a change in atmosphere or emotional experience?
The answer? ItΚΌs both.
The chemical compound responsible for those feelings of drive and excitement is called Dopamine. Dopamine lives within your brain, and is released when you experience intense stimulation (like an energized, crowded conference). Dopamine is what encourages you to βget up and go.β But unfortunately, Dopamine production is not bottomless. And when the effects of that intense stimulation wear off...so does the motivation.
So how can you use this information to get motivated and stay motivated, no matter the goal?
It all comes down to triggering Dopamine repeatedly, without overstimulating yourself to a point of burnout.
HereΚΌs how to do it:
You know that rush of excitement and energy you get when youΚΌre about to do something youΚΌre really excited about? Maybe itΚΌs presenting a project youΚΌve worked months on, or performing on stage, or even meeting someone new. That βtinglingβ sensation, that p u l l s you toward the final destination is your dopamine kicking in.
And if your mind is used to getting a dopamine rush at a regular time, from a regular action, regularly throughout the day....Triggering that rush will become easier than ever.
Step 1: Focus On Your Why: Think about why you want to do this task. Is it to advance your career? To graduate? To become a better person? Focus on the why behind your task and not the task itself to find your motivation.
Step 2: Reestablish Your Priorities: Prioritize your most important tasks while reminding yourself why they are most important. Checking your phone, browsing social media, chatting with friends wonΚΌt necessarily get you where you want to go. Keep your end goal in mind, and set your priorities up to reach it as quickly and effectively as possible.
Step 3: Visualize Your Future: Visualization is a powerful tool when it comes to motivation. But our minds can be sticky and unreliable. To help keep your visualization at the forefront of your mind, make it impossible to forget what your ideal future looks like. Hang pictures of your dream house around your home. Write out everything youΚΌll do once you have the income youΚΌre chasing, and post that list on your bathroom mirror. Change your phone or computer wallpaper to someone with a physique youΚΌre trying to attain. These consistent visual triggers will help you activate your dopamine receptors and get excited about chasing your goals.
Step 4: Fight For It: If you feel your motivation slipping, you have to be willing to fight for it. Just one day of breaking a new habit is enough to keep you from achieving your goal. One tap of the snooze button, one skipped workout, one period of procrastination can set you back rather than move you forward. Focus on your why, prioritize, and visualize your future. Then fight to push through your low period and get back to your hard work and drive.
If you follow these four steps and work to keep your motivation regular, youΚΌll see a massive change in your drive, energy, and excitement about even the most basic tasks.
And if you canΚΌt seem to get to there yourself, try Clarigenz Focus Plus+ for an extra kick of high-powered, unstoppable motivation whenever you need it.
