Why is protein important?

When most people think of protein, they think of the nutrient required to build muscle. Protein helps restore broken down muscle, and rebuilds the fibers needed to strengthen our bodies.

But did you know that protein is important for your brian too?

The building blocks of protein (called amino acids) are essential to basic brain function. But adding these amino acids into your diet can actually help your brain restore the transport proteins it needs to stay focused, energized, and mentally clear.

How do amino acids help the brain?

When youʼre using your brain power, your mind releases a series of neurotransmitters that trigger action throughout your body. But these neurotransmitters come in a limited supply. That means that overuse of neurotransmitters can lead to total depletion and feelings of mental burnout.

Just like protein restores muscle fibers, these amino acids can help replenish your neurotransmitters, too!

The three most important amino acids

Unfortunately, your body can't make these amino acids by itself. It needs to absorb them through food or supplements in order to replenish your neurotransmitter supply.

Here are the three amino acids most important when it comes to brain function, and what foods will help ensure youʼre getting these vital nutrients into your system:

L-Tyrosine

L-tyrosine is an essential amino acid that builds dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine neurotransmitters. Studies have shown L-tyrosine could be responsible for your mental alertness, memory, thinking skills, and cognitive flexibility.

Foods high in L-Tyrosine include

  • Beef
  • Salmon
  • Chicken
  • Milk
  • Sesame Seeds
  • And Lentils

DL-Phenylalanine

DL-phenylalanine is another essential amino acid that builds dopamine and norepinephrine. Unlike L-tyrosine, however, this amino acid has been shown in studies to help regulate mood, and overall mental state.

Foods high in DL-Phenylalanine include:

  • Tuna
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Quinoa
  • And Whole Wheat Pasta

Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine has widely been used in studies to improve attention, language skills, and as a method to prevent memory loss and mental decline from old age.

Foods high in Phosphatidylserine include:

  • Soy Beans
  • Eggs
  • Organ Meats (liver, kidney, etc.)
  • Cabbage
  • Mackerel
  • And Eel

As you begin to introduce more of these essential amino acids into your diet, youʼll notice youʼre able to stay focused, energized, and motivated for much longer without burning out from exhaustion.

A better way to replenish neurotransmitter supply

Finding and consuming the right amount of foods to ensure your brain is getting the essential amino acids it needs can be overwhelming. But there is a better way to provide your brain with the amino acids it needs, that doesnʼt include frequent grocery trips or hours spent in the kitchen.
